The field notes

Start with what’s underfoot.

Three simple habits to help you notice what your garden needs before reaching for another pot or product.

Your first nudge

Before you water,
get your hands dirty.
A dry surface doesn’t always mean thirsty roots. Feel the soil a couple of centimetres down before deciding whether to water.
Still damp? Give it time. Dry below the surface? Check your plant’s needs, then water at the soil rather than over the leaves.
01

Follow the light

Watch your growing spot through the day. Note how many hours of direct sun it gets, then choose plants suited to that light—not just the ones with the prettiest labels.

02

Give roots room to breathe

For container plants, use pots with drainage holes and a suitable potting mix. Empty standing water from saucers so roots aren’t left sitting in a puddle.

03

Make a five-minute garden round

Look under leaves, check soil moisture, and notice new growth. Regular little check-ins make changes easier to catch—and give you a reason to enjoy what’s growing.

Take it one leaf at a time

Your next step is a small one.

Pick one plant. Check its soil. Notice its light. You don’t need to do everything today—just give something growing a little attention.
